Howard Garet (born 5/14/30 in the Bronx, NY) passed away on February 9, 2021.
Preceded in death by his parents Meyer and Bessie Greenbaum and Brother Sidney Greenbaum (Beatrice). Beloved husband of 50 years to Barbara (nee Lenox). Loving father to David (Charisse), Kathy Garet, Amy Armand (Henry Dryovage), Jerry Garet, and Jennifer Manna (Alan).
Grandfather to Christina Argersinger (Andy), Stephanie and Jacqueline Garet, Daniel Armand (Michelle), M Armand, Erica Henderson (Rich), Brian and Alexa Manna, and Leah Shiebold (Mark). Great-grandfather to Jillian, Nathaniel, and Nicholas Argersinger, and Leo Armand.
Howard served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. During his time overseas he created a series of cartoons about a pair of G.I.’s that was circulated within his battalion.
After moving to Detroit in his 30’s he worked for Motor City Electric and went on to become Branch Manager of Hatzel & Buehler Electric’s Detroit office and was involved in numerous projects including the construction of the Hyatt in Dearborn and the Renaissance Center. He took a position at E.C. Ernst in New York City, moving the family to New Jersey in 1977, followed by a move to Libertyville, IL (1987) and back to Michigan in 1990. As part owner of Brooker Electric in Detroit he was involved with the east towers that were later additions to the Renaissance Center and the German Pavilion and the Italian Pavilion at Epcot Center in Orlando, FL.
Following his retirement in 1994 he was able to devote himself to painting, which had been a hobby during his working years. He did numerous art shows in Florida and Michigan, sold his paintings and prints, won several awards and was part owner of a gallery in Grand Haven, MI.
He will be laid to rest on Friday, February 12 at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. No funeral is planned. A memorial will be held at a future date due to the current pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made by check to Great Lakes Pastel Society, PO Box 6775, Grand Rapids, MI 49516. The Society, of which he was a member, will create a special honor award in his name. They plan to set up an on-line option in the near future: www.greatlakespastelsociety.com.
